Welcome
Bury Church of England High School is an ambitious and high‑performing secondary school where every child is encouraged to 'let their light shine'. Guided by our Christian vision, we are committed to academic excellence and an outstanding personal development programme that equips young people to leave us as responsible, respectful and resilient individuals, ready to succeed in a competitive world and contribute positively and purposefully to society.
Founded in 1748, Bury Church of England High School has a long and distinguished history, and has close links with the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. Since January 2022, we have been part of the Bishop Fraser Trust, sharing a common Christian vision rooted in John 10:10 — “Life in all its fullness”. While our school is rooted in history and tradition, we remain firmly focused on the future with significant investment in the learning environment, including new science laboratories and a modern large canteen and outdoor space opening in the summer.
At the heart of our school is an ambitious, knowledge‑rich curriculum, underpinned by evidence‑informed teaching practices rooted in educational research and best practice. We are proud to be one of the top‑performing schools in Bury, with students making strong progress across the curriculum and many subjects achieving outcomes above national averages.
Alongside academic achievement, we place a strong emphasis on personal development through our SHINE curriculum. Students engage in charity and fundraising activities locally and internationally, contribute positively to their community and environment, through experiences such as litter‑picking, building bug hotels, developing a school garden. Our support for international projects in Uganda further develops compassion, global awareness and social responsibility.
School life is enriched through a wide range of cultural and creative experiences, including productions such as High School Musical, concerts and celebrations, alongside a strong rewards programme and aspirational educational visits. These include a Geography trip to Iceland, visits to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Chester Zoo, and the National Science and Media museum, as well as opportunities to take part in expeditions to far away places like Peru, bringing learning to life beyond the classroom.
As a Church of England school, our Christian values shape the life and culture of our community. We warmly welcome families of all faiths and none and celebrate diversity, respect and inclusion. At Bury Church of England High School, students are challenged to aim high, supported to grow as individuals, and encouraged to 'let their light shine' - now and into the future.
