Mathematics

Department Vision

Our vision is to build a deep culture of understanding, confidence and competence in Maths; a culture that will produce strong secure learning and ambitious progress in the students that attend our school.

We intend to shape all our students into assured, inspired and resilient mathematicians helping them to become independent reflective thinkers – not just in Maths, but across the whole curriculum.

We intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their future adventures and working life. We incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high-quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Pupils are required to explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings. We encourage resilience, adaptability and acceptance that struggle is often a necessary step in learning and overcoming this will ensure outstanding success.

Curriculum Design

The Maths curriculum is based on pillars of knowledge that deepen in complexity of declarative and procedural knowledge over time. The curriculum is sequenced ensuring new knowledge builds on prior knowledge of mathematical concepts. The six pillars of knowledge underpinning the curriculum are: Number, Algebra, Ratio & Proportion, Geometry, Probability and Statistics.

Core knowledge that students should know and remember

Below is a document displaying the knowledge that we believe all KS4 students should embed within their long term memory in order to be successful mathematicians. This list should be used to prioritise your revision before moving onto deeper knowledge within the curriculum.

GCSE Maths Core Knowledge

Extracurricular

We enter the UKMT challenge competitions for Years 8 to 10 and often attend events hosted by Manchester University.

Maths Study Support sessions are available weekly. Here students will have access to laptops and help and support from a Maths teacher. KS3 are Thursdays and KS4 are Mondays 3pm in F6.

Further Resources

 'White Rose Schemes of Learning

All students follow the White Rose Maths Secondary Schemes of Learning. The scheme has been influenced, inspired and informed by the work of leading maths researchers and practitioners across the world.

Here are links to resources for all the units covered in Years 7 to 10.

The aims of the scheme are to build a deep culture of understanding, confidence and competence in Maths, a culture that will produce strong secure learning and real progress in the students that attend our school.

The mantra of White Rose Maths is the ‘Everyone Can Do Maths: Everyone Can’ a mantra that we the Maths department fully endorse.

We intend to shape all our students into assured, happy, resilient Mathematicians helping them to become independent reflective thinkers – not just in Maths, but across the whole curriculum.

The schemes of learning for each year are available through the following links.

Revision Resources

All Year 11 students will receive practice maths exam papers regularly to be completed as independent study. These are an opportunity for students to revise their skills, retrieve their maths knowledge and practice exam techniques. Following each paper students will complete an analysis sheet RAG rating the questions. The analysis sheets give the students a brief explanation as to how to do each question so that they can make improvements on the work they have previously completed.

Century Learning

Independent study support. All students have a Century Leaning account. This account provides all students with videos, presentation slides and continuing assessments. Students are set a ‘path’ of learning ‘nuggets’ according to the results of the diagnostic nuggets they should complete at the beginning of their course.

This path alters according to how they are progressing in each nugget or by the teacher when they set a nugget in line with what they have covered in class. Students can check their progress, practise skills and knowledge and learn content independently using this platform.
