Music
Departmental Vision
Our high quality music education is designed to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music, develop their talents as musicians and increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they will develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen, with discrimination, to the best in the musical canon.
Curriculum Design
Pupils will build on their previous knowledge and skills through performing, composing and listening. They will develop their vocal and/or instrumental fluency, accuracy and expressiveness; and understand musical structures, styles, genres and traditions, identifying the expressive use of musical dimensions.
Our curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils are able to:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
-
learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, be aware of different roles and careers in the music industry.
-
understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Students are encouraged to take part in a range of musical activities. The Year 7 Choir, Chamber Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band String Orchestra and soul band meet on a weekly basis and are well attended.
The department produces a concert at Christmas and in the spring and music plays an important role in the annual Carol service that takes place at Bury Parish Church. The choirs and bands also perform for school communion services. The Music department regularly contributes to our annual school production. In recent years the musicals have been: Bugsy, Joseph, Oliver, Annie and the Wizard of Oz.
Instrumental Music Lessons
Lessons are available for all the principle orchestral instruments, voice and piano.
Professional Partnerships
The department regularly engages with professional organisations at both a regional and national level. Recent projects have included workshops with Opera North, the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle Orchestra.
